What Is TDS and Why Does It Matter for Your Drinking Water?

If you've ever seen a small digital meter dipped into a glass of water at a home show or a water treatment consultation, there's a good chance it was measuring TDS — total dissolved solids. It's one of the simplest and most widely used numbers in the water treatment world, and for good reason: it gives you a fast, rough snapshot of how much “stuff” is dissolved in a sample of water. But TDS is also one of the most misunderstood numbers, because a single reading on its own doesn't tell you nearly as much as people often assume.

TDS refers to the combined weight of all minerals, salts, metals, and other dissolved substances present in water, expressed in parts per million (ppm), which for practical purposes is the same as milligrams per litre (mg/L). This includes things like calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, bicarbonates, sulfates, and chlorides — the everyday dissolved minerals present in virtually all natural water sources to some degree. A handheld TDS meter doesn't actually weigh any of this directly; instead, it measures the electrical conductivity of the water, since dissolved minerals carry an electrical charge, and converts that conductivity reading into an estimated ppm figure.

This is exactly where the biggest misunderstanding about TDS comes in. A conductivity-based reading tells you roughly how much dissolved material is present, but it has no way of telling you what that material actually is. A TDS reading of 250 ppm made up mostly of calcium and magnesium is a completely different situation from the same reading picking up something you'd actually want removed — and the meter simply cannot tell the difference. TDS is a useful indicator, not a certificate of safety, and it should never be treated as a stand-alone test for whether water is safe to drink.

So what is TDS actually good for? Two things, mainly. First, it gives you a general sense of how mineral-rich a water source is — municipal tap water in Ontario commonly falls somewhere in the range of roughly 50 to 400 ppm depending on the treatment plant and source, while private well water can vary far more widely depending on local geology. Second, and arguably more usefully, TDS is an excellent way to track the performance of equipment over time, particularly a reverse osmosis system.

This is where TDS becomes genuinely practical rather than just a curiosity. A properly functioning RO system, with membranes typically rejecting somewhere in the range of 95 to 99 percent of dissolved solids, should produce water with a TDS reading dramatically lower than what goes into the system — often dropping from a few hundred ppm down into the single or low double digits. If that gap starts closing over time, with the treated water's TDS creeping upward, it's usually one of the clearest early signals that a membrane is nearing the end of its service life, well before any change in taste becomes obvious.
